FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are a few questions that are asked most often by those inquiring about our products. Troubleshooting concerns are covered in the Manuals section of this web site. This page is updated periodically.

What is a hydraulic generator?

It is an electrical generator, much like the portable and gasoline generators, except that is driven by a hydraulic motor. The hydraulic motor is driven by a hydraulic pump that is powered by the vehicles main engine.

How does the hydraulic pump tap into the vehicle's engine?

Normally the pump is run off the vehicles PTO, but it can also mount directly to the transmission, transfer case or off the front of the engine.

Where can a hydraulic generator be used?

It can be used just about anywhere where there is primary engine that is already running, such as a fire truck, a work boat, and farm equipment to name a few. In some cases, there are mechanical limitations and we would be happy to address those with you.

How long have hydraulic generators been around?

As far as we know, we designed the first one, in conjunction with Schlumberger Well Services, back in 1969.

Would I be better to buy one of these instead of gas or diesel generator?

If the application is right, meaning you have a main engine running, then a hydraulic generator is far more beneficial than a gas or diesel. See our home page regarding all the specific benefits.

Do I have to maintain a constant rpm at my vehicle's engine?

No. Our pump compensates for rpm fluctuations. It does not matter if you are at idle or driving down the road; you can get full power anytime, all the time!

How reliable are these?

Hydraulics are very reliable. With proper care, our systems should out last your vehicle. It is not uncommon to see a 20 year old Harrison still operating! As long as your vehicles engine start then our systems will start. No more worrying about starting your generator in extremely cold weather.

What maintenance is required?

Maintenance is a snap, just change the fluid and filter once a year or every 500 hours, whichever comes first. There are no tune-ups, lubing, or other maintenance that is normally required on diesel and gasoline engines.

Are these expensive, compared to diesels and gasoline generators?

Our larger generators are actually less expensive to a comparable diesel and our smaller units are price competitive. However, when you factor in maintenance cost and how long these systems last, our systems are much cheaper.

Will I be able to get replacement parts for your systems, should it break down?

Yes, although breakdowns are very rare. We keep a large inventory of parts in stock and in most every case we ship out the parts the same day as requested.
